And I don't mean this to be snide. I'm looking for ideas to excel.  There is a local esty in my area who I've heard is 'wonderful', 'the best', etc.  But she jumps around from spa to spa and I'm just trying to figure out what people think makes someone 'the best'.  My clients love me and tell me my facials are 'the best' they've ever had, things like this.  But I can't write my own passport into any salon/spa I choose, like it seems this girl can.  Maybe experience?  Maybe having a large client following?   How do you get people to try your services if they have been going elsewhere, or are even skeptical of skin care therapies in general?  I guess I want my name to someday become knows as one of 'the best' in my area, but I'm not sure how to go about that.

I think the best way to start out is to study what this other esty is doing! You could talk about theories all day but in the end, you have someone right in front of you who is doing what you want to do -- being talked about by everyone as the best in your area, among your potential clients.

That reputation has to come from somewhere. Maybe she really is extremely good at what she does? Or maybe she does a lot more self-promotion and marketing ... maybe it's both? ... I would go and have a facial with her to see for yourself what you think as a client. And whenever you hear about her from others, ask them for more details, what is it they like so much? And where did they hear about her?

Good points, I may do that just to see.  I just wondered what other's experiences were, what makes one stand out over another?

When I consult with a new client, after asking if they've had skincare treatments in the past, I try to remember to ask what their favorite thing about their previous facial experience was.  This way, I can provide whatever that is, and make sure they are not walking out comparing me unfavorably to any other esthetician.  By topping their prior experience, I become a top esthetician.

I usually go by personality.   I might get a great facial by an Esthetician (good massage, thorough extractions etc) but if her personality rubs me the wrong way or she comes across as insincere...I probably won't go back.   I buy from the person...a person with a good personality that shows in the eyes and mannerisms can sell anything to me.   And remember we cannot please everybody...not everybody will like you.   Just be yourself, never compare and have a good people person/work ethic.   You are doing good I am sure.  Don't question yourself too much.....your time will come when it is meant to be.    Good luck.  :)

I like what Carrie said; go to the other esty and have a facial done by her. Chat with her esty to esty in a sincere way and I'm sure she would be willing to offer suggestions. Also I think what Claire said is good also...personality has a lot to do with why people will go with a certain person or business. It may not always be about what they do so much as to how people feel when they walk in and out of the place. Your clients love you because whatever you do great is your thing that they love and no one else can do it like you. Keep at it and I'm sure the folks are talking about you positively too.

I agree too, I would be booking a facial with her or having a family booking one with her to see what it is all cracked up to be!  I am sure it's probably too that maybe she has just been around longer and has built that name for herself.
