My love affair with hard wax

How do I love thee, hard wax, let me count the ways

I love that you don't need a strip to be removed

I love that you are so gentle on the delicate skin of the Brazilian, Brows, Face and Underarms

I love that, if I need to, I can use you in the same area twice

I love that when I place you, you stay put and don't move around into hair that I don't want to remove (especially helpful in the brows)

I love that you are less irritating and cause less pain than your runnier competition

We have been together for 9 years now and I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate you. Hard Wax, I don't know where I would be without you.

I couldn't agree more.

The soft wax for the larger body areas (legs, arms, chest, back)... or do you change up some there, too?

Yes Sally, I agree soft wax for larger areas of the body. Though you can use hard for the full body (European Wax Center does) I think it's just quicker to use soft and a bit more economical since you are using so much more wax in those areas.

I am new to the field of esthetics. Would you mind sharing your favorites in hard and soft wax? I trained on cirepil but am told there might be a more friendly soft wax out there.

Hi Sharie, welcome to the life of an Esthetician :) I have used Cirepil and Berins, which are polymer (contain plastic) and like both of them. Currently I am using my own hard wax (Beelicious Pina Colada) It's a non-polymer (plastic free) hard wax. You can check out my website if you are interested. The only place I use soft wax is on the larger body parts (backs, legs, chests). Lately I have been using, Alaska Ocean and one of Cirepil's Crystal Ocean. I like both for the larger areas. As for using a soft wax in the Brazilian area, that's not my thing. There are as many opinions about wax as there are waxes :) You just have to try them to find out what you like and what works for you. Good luck.

Do you have any experience with Depileve's European Gold (Hard) Wax and Pearl Rosin (Soft) Wax?

I use them and I do like them but wondered if anyone has experience with Depileve and other waxes and can offer some comparitive comments.

I used the European Gold years ago at the first spa I worked at, I thought it worked well, can't remember any horrible experiences with it. I also have used the Depileve Intimate Film, which was ok as well.

Yes, it's easy to use, spreads well, sets up nicely and quickly, but not too quick... not stringy and removes the hair without irritation. 90% of what I do is with the hard wax.

Since "used" is past tense I am thinking you may have some you prefer at this time?? I'd love to hear about that, esp. since you have past exp. with depileve.

I'm trying to remember if you mention wax brands on the Brazilian waxing dvd (I can go back and check that). Then again that may not be the same as used for facial waxing.

The secret life dvd is not product specific. Currently I am using my own wax hard wax Pina Colada that I have been working on for the past year and that was just launched. Previously and on the dvd I used Berins. They are two diff types of wax. Berins is a polymer (plastic) wax and Pina Colada is a non-plymer wax. They are both great waxes, and can be used on the face, just comes down to personal preference.

I'm drawing a conclusion that you prefer Berins over depileve. Is that a correct assumption?

What are the advantages with a plastic free wax?

I do like the Berins better. It's just better at removing the hair and it's easier to work with. Every wax has it's learning curve of course and it really is a personal preference. It's like perfume.

With plastic waxes, you get that kind of burnt plastic smell as well as the stringy-ness (that's the plastic). Also, you have to work very quickly and for those less familiar with hard wax and just learning that can be a problem. And because of the plastic it's also more flammable and not biodegradable. Not bad things, just things to note in comparison.

With a plastic-free wax, you don't have the strings & you don't get the burnt plastic smell. There are different versions of plastic free waxes just there are different version of plastic waxes, so consistency and drying time and how well it works with each hair type will vary from wax to wax.

I have found that people are afraid to use hard wax because they never learned how to use it correctly. If they just learned how to use it and gave it a try, they would fall in love with it.

I absolutely love hard wax and feel much more comfortable working with it than I do soft wax. Funny I guess, preferences and what you find to be easier or harder.

I will be anxious to try Berins and perhaps yours. It is great to find and offer better product...result, better service. This ASCP site is truly wonderful for that and for all the information we share as estheticians.
