Hello! I live in a very warm climate of Texas. During the summer months, temperatures are consistently in the 90's and 100 degree ranges. The sun is very bright and hot.

I always heard that Chemical Peels should be avoided in this type of climate during the Summer months. Mainly because of client compliance issues with wearing sun protection.

I'd like to know what you ladies thoughts are on this.

Do you administer Chemical Peels during the summer months? Why or why not?

Thanks in advance........ :)

nope. People ask for it and I say "no no no" :-)

You can have people sign all kinds of release forms, explanations, warnings, etc to not go out in the sun and they will do it. Especially here in Tampa, FL. Beaches, beaches beaches, that's all people think during summer time. I'm sort of keeping them safe from themselves LOL

What I have found is that people notice that you don't offer something for a period of time and they look forward to it or suddenly become interested to get something they couldn't get before. Humans are interesting animals...

Thank You for your input. I couldn't agree with you more. That's what I needed was to hear from other Esthy pros to make sure that I am doing the right thing, by not offering Peels at this time. :)

However, Microdermabrasion is fine, right? I know there is some compliance required with that too with their homecare, but not as much maintenance as with a peel. Do you offer Micro year round?

I actually don't offer micro at all. I use enzymes for exfoliation and offer more firming treatments during summer time. But that's just me. :-)

Sounds good! I may just focus on just providing deep exfoliation techniques, using enzymes, and save the more "aggressive" exfoliation treatments for when the Fall season begins. Thx!  :-)

I offer microderm all year round in Oregon.  I do caution to all my clients if they are planning to travel to tropical area, do it at least 1 week before travel or they want microderm after a trip wait at least a week or couple weeks after a sunburn.  I do stress at all times use sunscreen.

Thank you Nikki for asking this question. I came on looking for this very question. Im getting calls at my spa for chemical peels and I have always been really strict with not performing peels during summer months.

But I recently started to second guess myself because I see Groupons and other spas advertising for peels right now and it's mid JULY!! So I thought I would look on here to see if my fellow esti's have asked the same question.

I live in Northern California and although we don't have hot, hot, hot, weather like you do but it's still pretty nice and sunny. So Thank you ladies again for reassuring me that I'm doing the right thing.

Absolutely Erin! This has always been a questionable issue for me everytime Summer comes around. Like you, I have also seen the Groupon ads where spas are offering peels throughout the summer!

But in most of the very hot and sunny climates, like in Texas and Florida, for example, most Estheticians strongly suggest NOT offering peels until the Fall comes back around. Because we just cannot count on clients being compliant, unfortunately.

However, in areas where the weather and climate is cooler and the sun is less hot and bright, there should not be too much of an issue with offering peels all throughout the year.  As always, we just have to be firm with our clients about the importance of their post care and skin maintainence (pre and post peel).

It is a great thing that we are all here to help each other with these posing questions and issues that always come up in our skin profession!  ;))
