While I realize there is no "average" cost, I am interested on real numbers. For those that have established a home based treatment room, would anyone be willing to divulge the amount it cost to set it up? I would like to compare the cost of average booth rentals and a home based biz.

Fortunately, my husband is a GC, so adding on a room or any other build out to our home can be done at a discount. Nonetheless, I am clueless as to the average cost of getting your supplies, table, etc..all which is  necessary  to be fully functional. I understand there are business expenses, too, but I am more interested in the clinical costs..

Also, does anyone work part-time and rent out their room on off days? Is this a good or bad idea?

I have spent $8,000 BUT this is building a room from scratch in my garage. Also all the supplies I have spent to run my business along with equipment. I can pull my ledger out later try and look at just construction cost if you would like. I'm also in Southern California and we did all the work ourselves.

Thanks Natalie for such great detail-this helps a lot. What is your opinion about renting out your home space if you didn't work full-time?

No, I am researching as this will be a career change. I left the dental field a year ago after having my second child. I was a dental/admin assistant. Although, the money was probably equal to or more than that of an esthetician, I wanted to work in a happier environment as well as possibly have the opportunity to be self-employed with more flexibility because of my family. I am nervous about being able to find a job and the pay, but I want to enjoy what I do. I am exploring the skincare field now, while I have the free time.. ..

I did very cheap with only a manual bed, crock pot, lucas, mag light with steamer only, and a sink I had installed on an antique table from the thrift shop.  It has got me by all these years except for a new microcurrent which I use only for product applications and opening and closing pores.  My clients showed no interest in coming in every week for the lifting treatments on this machine.  They only come once a month for a 90 min. facial or every week for glycolics. My cd player and speakers for music even came from the thrift shop. I purchase linens from Costco.

Dear Sayra, which micro-current machine do you use?

I have a Bio Therapeutic Gold and love it!  They have smaller sizes and a variety of nice equipment..  For me they are a local company and clients love that idea!
