I had a client call me and let me know her skin looked horrible! She had been out in the SUN the day before and woke up with "brown spots."  My immediate response in my mind is the SUN!  This is the first issue I have had like this.

We had completed a TCA Depigmentation peel series December 22.  Has not had been back to see me.

Please if anyone has any ideas or suggestions to handle this situation they are greatly appreciated.

This is a terrible feeling for you as an esthetician.  We are so conscientious with our clients and then to have them screw it all up for us...  aggravating!!

My main question would be what sort of warnings you gave her about the sun.  I'd assume that you gave her ample warning that the sun would NOT be her friend if she wants to keep that hyperpigmentation down, but in the unlikely event that you did not mention limiting sun exposure or can't remember if you did, then I might extend a little something - one free peel if she repeats the series, for example.

Going forward, I would have clients who are in for pigmentation (or maybe all clients) sign off that they AGREE to avoid the sun, and they understand that if their treated skin is exposed to the sun, pigmentation will resurface and possibly even worsen (that sun damage is how the pigment got messed up in the first place, as we know!)

Thank you so much for your advice! Greatly appreciated!

I like to see my clients on a monthly basis after completing the series to keep them in maintenance mode to keep the pigment away.  I don't think I would start the series over, but you might start Lemon Zest facials, plus bump up the number of times she's using the glycolic/retinol pads to lift the sun damage.

Keep in mind, if she's in the sun, she should keep exfoliation minimal.  No peeling with sun exposure.  You also don't want to use tyrosinase inhibitors in the sun.

Please feel free to call me at 480-543-1121 if you would like to discuss your client further.

Thank you Lisa for your time! I did send you an email before I posted on here... I was having a busy morning and got the phone call from my client.  It sent me into a panic!! :)   I am getting her in for a lemon zest facial. She was much better today! I am going to give you a call!  Thanks again!!
