Hello TE's!  I am moving to El Paso in August!  Any advice on what to do when I get there.  I am worried I might have to go back to school.  Texas training hours are about 120-150 hours more than ours here in California.  Hopefully, my working hours will count.  Has anyone transplanted to Texas?  Is the re-licensing for there difficult?  I am also considering converting my garage into my salon....any ideas on that???  Thanks all.

I've only been licensed three years and not certain but I would imagine TX will require you to get the additional hours. I think you could use your garage, as long as there is a separate entry to it. I would contact TDLR.  It's hard to find any definitive rules and regs, the book is pretty useless in my opinion. I just got my FL license a couple months ago and though I had 500 hours more than they required, I had to take a ton of CEU's before I could get it. I would suggest to do what you can before you get here. Good luck. Never been to El Paso.

Thanks, Deborah. What is TDLR and CEU?

Sorry, Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Continuing Education Units.

CEU means Continued Education Units

You may have already gotten the answer to your question, but if not.  TDLR is the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations.  It is the blanket reglatory agency for the Texas Board of Cosmetology.  If you are already licensed in CA, you should not have a problem.  Ask them about Reciprocity  with CA. As for using the garage, that may present some challenges.  It will have to qualify for a Specialty Salon License. But the board will be able to answer your questions.

Thanks, Jeff and Deborah. I have checked with TDLR. Filed the reciprocity form and the certification form. And continue to research rules and regs for Texas. Will also apply for various Esthetician positions with spas. Thanks again.
