I did start out in my home, then moved my spa to the town close to where I live and put up with things I didn't like. Even tho I had more room I decided to move my location back home and enjoy it so much better. My clients do too! I love the convenience and they don't seem to mind driving a few extra miles to see me. I would definitely recommend you to work from home and save those extra $$ you are spending on rent or invest it in products you can retail, and some nice decor for the atmosphere you want to achieve.
I am a registered nurse, nail technician, and esthetician who opened my own practice right out of school. I currently rent space from a salon owner. The salon is very new and the decorations are beautiful but the stylist are not very professional and the owner brings her pomeranian to the salon everyday. My clients have commented on not liking the dog being in the salon. My rent is $700 a month and I don't have the retail space I need. I always wanted my practice to be home based but my husband and esthetics instructor thought it would be best if was in a salon. I have been in the salon since April and have gained maybe three clients, the rest have come from my own marketing. I am considering finding a medical director so I can add botox and fillers to my menu and a dog running around is just gross, even though he isn't ever in my treatment room. Has anyone moved their business home before the had steady clients?
@Julia - Thanks for responding! I have the product lines that I have in mind to combine!
@Dorothy - Those are the exact two lines that I combine. They each have products I really like. (Love the SS exzymes, love the BE sunscreens.)
I was laid off in Oct. The owner was running living socials, once those were gone so was her spa biz. It has been tough finding another job. Mainly because of the hours most spas are open. Having kids in school, I do not want to work late into the evenings. So, I have though about doing a mobile or home based biz. Any of you ladies here in Texas know what the requirements are?

@Dorothy.... I have no problem mixing product lines because I have a few favorite from different professional companies and enjoy the variety when doing a facial. I have never had any negative issues doing this.
Has anyone ever mixed brands during the skin treatment? I want to get bioelements (cleansers and moisturizers) and skin scripts for everything else. Is this a good idea?
@ Sandy and others looking to open a home business....
You will need a business license to have a home based esthetic salon. The health department in each State will also have different requirements to the set up of your home salon. In regards to zoning I live in a residential area out in the country so I cannot have a sign on my lawn but I did put a 8x10 framed one beside my front door and one hanging from my mailbox of the same size (discreet but there). I also have an ASCP (Associated Skin Care Professionals) sticker on my front glass door so clients know they are entering a professional and insured business. Hello everyone! I am still a student with plans of having my own home business. I am 50 yrs old and will be 51 when I graduate. I love reading and learning about others here that are doing their own business. I attend a wonderful school called Anew Vision Academy located in Newton NC. I will graduate in September of 2012. Awhile yet I know but planning is everything in the beginning. I work hard at my classes and work even harder on my goals to open my own business. I have already begun to network and market myself around here. I hand out business cards for future clients to come to the school and ask for me. Of course other students can work on the clients too. But our school is new and there are some folks around here that do not even know what Esthetics is all about. I go out every weekend somewhere just to leave my cards. So hopefully when I get ready for my business to begin, I will have a good bit of clients to begin with.
