This is a group for all home-based providers with a treatment room at home, full-scale business at home or just those considering home-based skincare. Let's put our heads together on ideas to meet the challenges of a micro-spa. To our success!
I am glad to see this category. I am trying to put a home-based esthetic business together and could use some iinput from others who are doing the same.
Welcome! Thank you for joining the group. I am so excited to hear about everyone and their home based spa! For me, my biggest challenge is how to market a micro-spa. I know this will be a great group to share our ideas & experiences.
Hello everyone, so glad to find this group. I have a home-based skin therapy studio now after owning a commercial location for seven years in SF, CA. and working in various places from full service salons, to time share resorts, to spas, to medical clinics...so I love my home-based biz, it's definately a challenge in many ways. Hope to learn and share with you all.
I am excited about seeing this group as well, I am in the process of putting my room together, I was fortunate to rent an older home that was once owned by a Dr. you ran his practice out of his home, so th actual set up is perfect. I have the equipment I need, but I am wondering how I should decorate it, there are not any counter top space, so do you think I should add like a chest of drawers or would it look to bedroom like. If anyone has any pictures or thoughts I would appreciate it, decorating was/is not my strong area. Also do you accept credit cards?
Thank you so much, everyone, for joining this group. I will admit, it was a selfish move on my part because I know there are home-based esthies out there and I want to learn all I can from them! Cheers to our success.
Hi! Angi here and so glad to see this group. I too am in process of opening up a home based esty business and am looking for some really user friendly esty business software to keep books and everything else on. Also to comment on the entrance/powder room comment. In the state of Florida, you do have to have a separate entrance and a bathroom that is accessible and not reached by walking through your home. Also In addition I have found that I have to have it handicap accessible both outside and in bathroom. This is for the state of Floriday. Laws may differ in your area.
I have just graduated for the Aveda Institute in Greenfield, WI. I am 52 years old and just starting a career after raising my 3 children. I am curious about a home based skin care business. Does your location have to be zoned for business? I am not sure what direction to go with this profession. Any input is truly appreciated. ~S
@ Sandy, Congratulations on your graduation. The first place to start from my experience is with your state board and see if they allow home based businesses and if they do what requirements they have. Some states require separate entrances etc. from there you need to check with your city to see what they require for a business license in the home. The school you attended may have some info also since they need to be up on local state regulations. Hope that helps you with a bit of a start. Good luck to you, I too am 52 and although I have been licensed for 14 yrs. I started over in Florida spring of last year. This time I am renting a room in a salon as Fl requires the separate entrance and bathroom which I do not have in my current home. Again best of luck to you!
Hello everyone! I am still a student with plans of having my own home business. I am 50 yrs old and will be 51 when I graduate. I love reading and learning about others here that are doing their own business. I attend a wonderful school called Anew Vision Academy located in Newton NC. I will graduate in September of 2012. Awhile yet I know but planning is everything in the beginning. I work hard at my classes and work even harder on my goals to open my own business. I have already begun to network and market myself around here. I hand out business cards for future clients to come to the school and ask for me. Of course other students can work on the clients too. But our school is new and there are some folks around here that do not even know what Esthetics is all about. I go out every weekend somewhere just to leave my cards. So hopefully when I get ready for my business to begin, I will have a good bit of clients to begin with.
@ Sandy and others looking to open a home business....
You will need a business license to have a home based esthetic salon. The health department in each State will also have different requirements to the set up of your home salon. In regards to zoning I live in a residential area out in the country so I cannot have a sign on my lawn but I did put a 8x10 framed one beside my front door and one hanging from my mailbox of the same size (discreet but there). I also have an ASCP (Associated Skin Care Professionals) sticker on my front glass door so clients know they are entering a professional and insured business. Has anyone ever mixed brands during the skin treatment? I want to get bioelements (cleansers and moisturizers) and skin scripts for everything else. Is this a good idea?
@Dorothy.... I have no problem mixing product lines because I have a few favorite from different professional companies and enjoy the variety when doing a facial. I have never had any negative issues doing this.

I was laid off in Oct. The owner was running living socials, once those were gone so was her spa biz. It has been tough finding another job. Mainly because of the hours most spas are open. Having kids in school, I do not want to work late into the evenings. So, I have though about doing a mobile or home based biz. Any of you ladies here in Texas know what the requirements are?

Please address all questions in the "Add a Discussion" tool above. I am looking forward to seeing how many esthies are working from home.

@Dorothy - Those are the exact two lines that I combine. They each have products I really like. (Love the SS exzymes, love the BE sunscreens.)
