Hi Jennifer! That is exciting that you are so close to finishing your esthetician program! I would love to hear where you end up :)
When I was going through my program (1997-1998, I knew my interest was in the medical arena as well. It took a little time to break into, though, so I worked at two different spas and kept applying and interviewing until I got my first med spa position in 2001. Even though medical esthetics is quite different from spa esthetics, it is still so valuable to spend time becoming more comfortable and experienced in your field .
I think, too, that you are always able to learn from each job experience and bring something from that experience with you that will help you in the future. My first skincare job helped me become more comfortable with waxing, and the second helped me become accustomed to a busy schedule, for example. I've also met some incredible people along the way, and both my coworkers and clients have contributed to who I am today.
It's also a good idea to visit as many med spas as you can, and to receive services if you are able to. This will give you a good feel for the doctors and staff you could potentially be working for/with.
I am new to the Tri-Cities. I moved from W WA in September. Before I moved I was the medical esthetician/laser technician for Dr. Robert Niedbalski in Tacoma. Currently, I am not practicing in my field, but I am providing social media management and patient education for Dr. Niedbalski. Not sure if and when I will practice again, but for now it is fun for me to remain involved with the field of esthetics!
