I have an African American client who presents with grade  2 acne and lots of deep rooted congestion covering almost the entire face  and the clieht has an allergy to Sulfer, I work primarily with Dermalogicia products and as such I clearly cant use Dermalogica's Medibac line ( which would cleary be my first choice) do to sulfer being a main ingredient for that specific line. How do I treat this client and give sound results? I would like to recommend an appropriate product line as well as treatment plan, along with a home care regime.   All suggestions are welcome.

And ladies I am so glad to have you by my side.  Its makes this Esthetics journey so much easier!

I agree with diet. shellfish, dairy, sugar and caffeine can REALLY mess up the skin. Wheat is now also a problem for a lot of people. I would try the pumpkin peel from Head2Toe, Phoenix Rising natural skin care also had great homecare for a cleanser, brown rice cleanser and repairing serum. baking soda is great as well as benzoyle peroxide. i find less is more with these clients. cleanser, exfoliator, moisturizer and spot tx.

hope this helps

Dermalogica is a very superficial spa line that is not intended to "treat" such problems. Like the sugesstion before me i would advise her to see a dermatoligist and percribe her something to help with the acne.

Hi Theolyn,

First of all, has your client shared her diet habits with you? If she has, try to weed out if her diet is contributing to her skin issues. Secondly, are you using alot of steam to help open her clogged pores? Opening the pores is always a good start. Sometimes we as Aestheticians have to use the lancets to promote extractions. If her skin is more cystic, she may need an antibiotic that her Dermatologist/MD can recommend to break that up. She also sounds like she needs a good enzyme to kill that bacteria. I really suggest having her see her Dermatologist for an evaluation before trying to treat something you may be struggling with for a while with minimal results. You are a professional, so extend that recommendation to her to see the Derm. Be sure to have her comply with doctors orders so you can help her help herself. Good luck!
