I am a small Spa owner always looking for ideas on how to save money. My payroll is out of control. Any Spa owners in the group? Could you please give some ideas as to how your pay scale is set up? I desparately need to do something. I have 5 commission based employees. Any input would be welcome. Thank you!

Thanks for your information. Iam a graduate of Dori's Leap Ahead seminars. She is amazing. Iam considering going to a sliding scale. Just wanted to see what other spa owner's were offering their employees.

I'm a small spa owner and the best thing I've ever done is team up with a consultant, Dori Soukup at Insparation Management. It's not only about saving money but also increasing your business. She has a whole program. Last year we grew 24.5% and so far this year we've grown 30% (same time last year) and have just gone through the 'quiet' time of the year. Our compensation is commission based but it's on a sliding scale. The therapists that recommend additional services receive more. They do more services, they make more money, we make more money. I have a team of 12 and they are all very happy. When they hit their target they get rewards as well as the highest commission. We also run retail and membership competitions with the team being able to receive bonuses, etc. Google Dori - it's totally worth the money. I believe one has to invest in one's business.

In my opinion, the best way to go about it is to pay them a fixed rate per service for example $25 per one hour  massage (depending on what you charge for the service this should be kept at under 40% of the cost of the service), that way, if you change your prices or give clients discounts, the workers still get paid the same.  If you are paying a commission, then keep it under 40%, otherwise, you are not making any profit.
