Ladies (and Gentlemen!) Please, Please, Please Don't Do This!

You guys know that I don't normally chat about negative stuff but I really need to understand this. I think I may have even written about this one awhile back but it happens time and time again and I'm just so very curious....

I'll return a phone call to an Esty that has left me a message about a piece of equipment or she's just needing some help with something. She (or he) will answer the phone only to tell me they are doing a facial and can't talk right now. They are literally answering their phone from the treatment room, they are whispering to me! Why are you answering your phone in the treatment room? Why is your phone even in the treatment room with you? Am I really old fashioned (or just old!) and it's okay to do this?  Please help me understand this one!

No , you are not old fashioned at all.  I would never answer the phone when someone is getting a treatment its their time to have all your attention if its important they will leave a message.  I also don't understand employees who are on their phones text message or facebook on  their employers clock.  I'd fire them do it on your break if your working for someone I see it at alot of jobs I've had.  Wheres their work ethic that is not ok in my books.

An online booking system  , and a virtual receptionist  does the job for me  I use Spa Booker, and one box for my answering service   my clients book on line those who don't

wish to leave a message that is transcribed into text  i call them back later  but try to do so on the same day

I also do not understand an esty that brings a phone in, nor an LMT. It is just not done. Is your BF that important? ha ha . However, many clients bring their phones in and they do answer them sometimes. I don't have my own office, so I just let them be as it does not do for one to get in one's clients face... if they want to ruin their relaxation experience, massage is part of the tx - then they can.

I have seen more male clients recently for facials- way to go, guys!!

Not OK at all...I work alone, do not have a front desk person, but never answer phone calls during a clients treatment time..I call back when I am finished, your absolutely right Shelley..

It's unfortunate that it's necessary to spell out 'please call to cancel if you cannot make it' to the event, but it does indeed seem to be necessary. When things are 'free' unfortunately, a lot of people don't place the value on the service, event, or item they would if it had a fee.

Sounds like it was a wonderful event!

Thanks for all of your comments! I feel better knowing that most of us are on the same page about this subject.

I'd like to add another two cents here about something I just don't understand. There seems to be about a 30%  "no show" rate at the free seminars we give. We had one at my training center last Sunday. Lisa from Skin Scripts was there. She is such a generous person. Her workshops are free and she even buys lunch. We had 44 registered and only 32 showed up. She planned and paid for lunch for 44. I feel very protective of her and this really makes me sad. It's very disrespectful. It's so easy to pick up the phone or send an email.....there's no reason not to let us know that you will not be attending.

Okay, on the lighter side....it was an awesome workshop as always! I've been with Lisa at 7 of her workshops now and I learn something new every time I listen to her!!

I do keep my phone in my room but I would never answer it during a service and the ringer is always off.  I did see a post a while ago in the forum the esty that wrote it said that she did answer her phone during treatments and make appts because she was loosing business by not answering her phone!  I was couldn't believe it, I would never go back to someone that took a call while they were doing my treatment.

Hi Shelley! This is obsurd behavior for any esty! As estheticians we need to be professional no matter what our work setting is. For lack of a better word, I would be "pissed" if I was paying for a facial and my esthetician answered her phone! I work alone with no receptionist and I turn my phone off while I'm working. I always check my voice mails when I have a chance and return calls at an appropriate time later and I let my clients know that I have online booking if they just need to schedule. We estheticians should be focusing on the paying client in the chair and not concerned with who is calling. This behavior is very unprofessional in my opinion. They should know better. =)

I have to add this comment- I used to work at a spa where I often did couples massages with other therapists. One therapist on staff would ALWAYS be texting or browsing the internet on her Smart Phone while doing the massage!!!! She only used one hand/arm/elbow on the client, the other way always on her phone. I was appauled!!! She gave me a massage one time and I knew she was doing the same thing. Can you imagine?!!

Student here Shelley, but I totally agree with you and Yadira! I do not think you should ever have your phone in the treatment room, much less answer it while doing a treatment.  Even just the ringing or ring tune, is enough to disrupt your client's relaxing moment.  I agree it is not old fashion, it is just common respect for your client!!! We are never allowed to have our cell phones or nothing in the treatment room that will interupt the service.  Our instrutor would not allow us to attend our classes any longer if we got caught using a phone in the treatment room. It is a rule in our student handbook. So I would think that most Estys have learned this very important rule to begin with.  NO PHONES IN TREATMENT  ROOMS!!!
