Should you trademark your business name?

Hi Everyone,

Just curious about trademarking my business name, it costs alot including the government fees for filing.  Does anyone feel is really necessary for growing your brand.

Thnaks,

If you are marketing and selling products, yes.

If it is just a service business, probably not.  Even if you are going to grow, unless you are going national it is not necessary.

You only run into issues if there might be confusion in the marketplace between you and the trademark holder -- if there is one.

Someone in CT who owns a chiro/rehab center trademarked "Relax & Rejuvenate".  We don't operate in CT, we don't do rehab work.  No conflict at all.

I think that it is necessary if you want to market and protect your brand on a larger scale.

I have the info since I was going to TM the business name and skin care line name when I was going to go private label. But, fate intervened, and I have shelved that idea for the time being. The fees are kind of high when you are just a little solo biz, and probably not necessary if you are going to stay small/solo and NOT go private label. But if you definitely have big plans...

This is the book I got - the company NOLO has a website that you can do this through.
