I know this is a weird question.....I'm used to using microderm with crystals, but I just started a new job where I'll be using diamond tip. I demo'ed the machine, but it didn't feel like it was doing anything. I personally have very sensitive skin that's too fragile for microderm with crystals, but the diamond tip--even on the highest setting--felt weak to me. It just felt like a little bit of suction, nothing special. Is that what it's SUPPOSED to feel like?

To be fair, I was told by another esthetician that there was supposed to be a little ring inside of the tip, but that the rings were missing, so they just used the machines without them. The tips I'm used to with crystals don't have rings in them. What are those rings? Would the fact that they're missing explain why the microderm felt so weak? Or is that how diamond tip microderm is supposed to feel?

Thanks!

Sounds like the machine is clogged. Once you unclog it...start from the lowest setting then work your way up. Call manufacturer for instructions on how to clean it.

I agree with Jennifer, just look and see if it is clogged.

First my job had a diamond tip machine, all my clients were very happy after the treatment, one lady used to come every week, she was saying her skin felt like baby's skin.

Me personally, one time a girl did it on me (the diamond tip), and .... nothing, I didn't like it at all. And I don't know if her machine was clogged.

I got hired at a spa and noticed the machine was clogged because the estheticians were not using the lil flat "skin catchers" they're flat cotton filters. I removed the suction hose and cleaned out all the dead skin. Fitted the filter and the lil plastic ring.
I told the manager and the other two estheticians, but the next day one of the estheticians used the machine on high and injured a clients face....with the first stroke she drew blood. It looked like a "road rash" kind of scrape.
So once you get it cleaned, turn it down and try it on yourself.

I was taught in school, always try it on low setting first, and always try it on your hand first.

Thanks everybody!! I'll have to get a good look at the machines and check them when I go in next. From what you guys are saying, they definitely sound clogged!

Jennifer, is the little plastic ring you mentioned holding in the "skin catchers"? Those little rings are definitely missing, so I'm feeling like the filters may be missing, too. Once I'm there tomorrow, I'll look at the model of the machine and see if I can find more details about it to see what's missing! I have a feeling I'll be taking over and deep cleaning them like you did, haha.  :)

And yeah, I always start low, except it's better to test on a small patch on the client's shoulder rather than your hand. If the tip touches your skin first, it should technically be sterilized before being used on anyone else's skin! Plus, we may perceive the pressure differently than the client, so we want to make sure it's comfortable for them. So I always just let the client know I'm testing it on their shoulder and ask how it feels, then move on to the face so I don't have to worry about re-sterilizing or getting a new tip.  :)

Totally agree, Kristina

Also just came to my mind, is it ok to do a test on the side of neck? or still better shoulder?

in the title of your post you asked what does it feel like. thats why i said try it on yourself after fixing the clog. I always test on clients neck.

Yeah I need to get my hands on that machine to unclog it! I'm looking forward to testing it now  :)

I like to test on the shoulder (or even the forehead), because they're likely to feel more pain on a bony area rather than an area like the neck or cheek that has more tissue. If they're comfortable on a bony area, they'll be just fine for passes on fleshier areas, also.

I like diamond for the body, and for tiny areas of the face..but to be honest, I get nervous about some aestheticians who think it cannot draw blood or leave "hickeys" . Really nervous ! :o
