Hello All, I hope your day is going well. I have a new client who has lupus, its not active at the moment but I am not sure what the contraindications may be. I have done a ton of research and cannot find anything. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Hi David,

I would be careful doing any chemical peels, avoid LED treatments or using too much heat(steam). Light and heat can trigger a flareup. Most people with Lupus have many sensitivities and allergies, so it's best to avoid products that can trigger the immune system or overstimulate.

Thank you! I appreciate the info.

Hi David! I hope this isn't too late, but ASCP has an amazing webinar on treating clients with autoimmune disorders. I looked into this a bit when I had a client with lupus come to me, and that webinar was helpful, among other sources. I absolutely agree with Karen's answer, but one thing that suck with me when I was doing my research is that enzyme-only exfoliation is recommended for clients with autoimmune disorders (no physical or chemical component at all), as it feels more gentle on the skin and won't overstimulate. I hope that helps!  :)
