I need some good advice on treating skin problems in pregnant women.  I have a new client who is 14 week pregnant with bad acne.  She wants me to treat it, and I told her I needed her Dr's OK before using the acne line products on her.  Is there any research that suggests that salicylic acid, sulfur, clay and/or charcoal can be harmful to a fetus when absorbed through the skin?  When she came to see me, I only used basic products on her, with no active ingredients, but she is really pushing me to clear her acne.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would not recommend to use any AHA or BHA on a pregnant woman, be very careful with sulfur, because many pregnant women might develop an allergic reaction to this chemical, you can patch test if you like to use sulfur anyway. But you can treat her with clay masks or any other organic herbal acne products. If her acne is more aggressive I usually treat my clients with PCA skin Detox gel or Oxy trio, more info on www.pcaskin.com. Hope it helps and good luck.
Salicylic is said to be harmful- I'm not sure why but that's what I've heard. Have you considered enzymes? Enzymes have worked in my experiences. Let me locate an article for you...
This is a controversial topic.  It is up to the doctor of course, but also the mother since the same debate can be had about using hair color or getting acrylic nails when pregnant.  All can be absorbed through the skin.
Thanks everyone for the advice.  I will see what her Dr says, and go from there.  I will get something in writing from him/her if I can.
Most doctors say to stay away from anything with salicylic and vitamin a formulations (prescription and otc).  Most doctors ok the use of mandelic acid and benzoyl peroxide - both of those used together can keep most acne at bay.  And you definitely need to get a list of ingredients from their doctor to avoid.  You need to avoid any liability - let that be the doctor's problem!
I use organic products from Eminence, and see alot of pregnant women.  Some pregnant women can't tolerate the extractions.  If they can, I use the 10% enzyme and steam to soften before extraction.  If they can't tolerate extraction, I use Vodder's Manual Lymph Drainage for face and neck.  I then use a tx mask for drying (has clay) and calming, and follow with the Herbal Spot Serum (which I include for home care recommendations).   Hope this helps you.
Thanks everyone!  Clay is exactly what I used on her 1st treatment.  She hasn't called me back yet, so her Doc may have told her no treatments until after the baby comes.
I just read no salicylic acid on pregnant women, but can't remember where! Sorry. Laura is a specialist in acne, maybe private message her??
oh hello, sorry, THE REST of the real answers finally popped up.
The interesting part is that she never called me back, so I'm guessing her doc said no.  She was really excited too about her options to get her acne under control.  Hopefully he recommended something that will help her.
Just a reminder that the PCA Detox Gel has salicylic in it so it is not a great choice from pregnant or nursing ladies.
IMAGE skin care is a good line to use for pregnant women. Check them out and see if anything appeals to you.
