Any thoughts on acne prone clients using Cetaphil?

If you want to get them using products that are senergistic ( work together towards the same end) then Cetaphil probably isnt the approach to take. We want to lead our clients in a particular direction with the end result being beautiful are at least improved skin not that this product wont help but what would the next step be...

Here's the ingredient deck for Cetaphil Cleanser -

Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Stearyl Alcohol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben

SLS is a major pore clogger (a "5" out of 5), so no I wouldn't use it on acne clients.  For my list of pore cloggers go here:

Add to that, all the PARABENS! They are hormone disruptors... Think how that can affect an anceic, hormonally compromised client!
Oh, the paraben debate... my acne line has parabens in it and I get incredible results in getting people clear.  My attempt at taking the parabens out of the line was a big lesson for me - it takes 5 times as much alternative preservative than it does parabens to make products stable/safe.  This makes for a MUCH more irritating product in most cases.  Really not a good idea for acne.    I have talked to several cosmetic chemists about this issue and they all say the same thing... best to stick with the parabens, believe it or not.

Michelle,

I also would NOT recommend using Cetaphil cleanser or moisturizer. Almost invariably when I have a client come in with horribly congested skin, they are using Cetaphil! It never ceases to amaze me that many  physicians and derms still recommend using this product to their clients!

If someone is determined that they're only going to buy cheap supermarket/drugstore products, is there something to steer them towards instead of Cetaphil? Of course the professional products are going to work better, but if a client can't or won't buy those products, what's their best option at the supermarket?
I talked with my product rep about this one... she really hesitated. Then said if you must, then go to a 'market' such as Whole Foods or something and check their organic/ natural selection. I don't like doing that either, but whatever it takes for them to stop using Neutrogena! bleh...

I'm so late to this party (and by party I mean discussion) but I agree with Michelle!  I have observed the same with my clients.  I honestly don't recommend any cheap/supermarket drugstore products, because when you look at the ingredients, they really are all the same.  I recommend a non-drying cleanser, non-alcohol toner to balance the pH which is most likely very disrupted and a non-clogging lotion designed for broken out skin.  I really stick to my guns on this one because if they are non-compliant, they will not get the results that they are looking for, and that will ultimately reflect poorly on me!  I believe in guiding clients towards solutions, as I'm sure you do too.  Every so often, I have a client who resists buying product but most often, when I clearly explain the benefits and ease of investing in quality skincare that will promise them results (I offer a money back guarantee), they nearly always take my advice!  Good topic!

Thank you for sharing exp. w/ones who won't purchase your homecare. With the economy still down in this area it's hard to retail (not a good salesperson either). I have both PCA (and won't use their acne products after finding clog poring ingredients) and FR which I think are resonable in price but still more than grocery store.

Regarding the Mac makeup- she's probably using studio-fix? That would cause even skin that isn't prone to breakouts to break out and be very congested. It was created to be theatrical makeup which of course has to go on much heavier to be visible on the stage. I have had a number of clients on it that love the coverage, but the results over time are just so detrimental to their skin! I suggest they switch to a good liquid mineral foundation that provides excellent coverage as well (which they usually want) yet is very healthy for the skin and won't cause that kind of congestions. I like Glo Minerals.
