I have a client that suffers from cystic acne...under the skin, very painful, at least 2-3 bumps during any given breakout.  They are usually around the nose area and chin.  She recently went off her oral antibiotic but is using a topical retin-A and she suffered from a pretty bad cystic breakout.  What can I do to help her when she gets one of those cystic type acne breakouts?  They are very painful for her...anything you can suggest topically that will help soothe the pain and help reduce the inflammation?  I did use the high frequency with benzoyl peroxide and that seemed to help but any other suggestions for those time she does breakout.  Sometimes it's just one, but very swollen, never usually comes to a head and very painful.  Doesn't even usually appear red necessarily.  Thanks for your help!!  I had suggested she look into some vitamins and such and avoid dairy (she is also a new Esthetician like me).

@Heidi - you sent me this message:

"OK am seeing more of this: lots of bumps under the skin on the forehead, sides of face, neck. All these clients are surfers, who are very difficult to treat (ie non compliant) have a terrible time getting off the zinc/titanium blocks/therefore they also have blocked pores and their skin is sundamaged....) how do you suggest I treat them...and yes they are sensitive as well."

If they are non-compliant you won't be able to do anything for their acne.  There is a great zinc sunscreen that has been tested to be waterproof for 8 hours that would be ideal for surfers:

Solar RX SPF 30

@Madeleine - if that's all she wanted, then yes, I would probably indulge her.

@Hong - thyme might have some great antibacterial problems, but remember besides being antibacterial, benzoyl peroxide peels the inside of the pore.  That's crucial in getting acne under control!  I don't think thyme does that.

I was reading an article posted on New Beauty blog stating that Thyme can treat Acne better then benzoyl peroxide. Have anyone tried rubbing Thyme on their face?

Here's the link to the article if anyone is interested:

Laura, I just saw your extraction demo.  Fabulous!  Question:  I have heard you say that you never do extractions on the nose since those are simply sebaceous plugs.  What about blackheads in the crease between the nostril area and the face.  I have an elderly lady who is coming in soon and wants those extracted.  Would you?

Hong, welcome to this amazing group.  If you to pursue treating acne I highly suggest purchasing the book Acne Rx by Dr. James Fulton, reading it over and over, contacting Laura Cooksey and purchasing her DVD and reading the posts that are shared on this site.

Good luck!

Hi there,

I am currently a student and graduating in Dec 2012. My passion is acne and anti-aging treatments. I was wondering if anyone has advice on how to lead me to this career path. Also, if there are any classes in the bay area specialist on acne or anti-aging. I live in San Jose, CA. Any advice will be helpful! Thanks a bunch!!!
