I started off as an esthetician working as an employee in a spa. Did that for 3 years felt over worked and under paid. So I took a break and am now getting back into the profession as an independent contractor trying to rebuild my business. So far it has been a struggle. My question is, is it better to specialize in one certain aspect of skincare ie anti aging or acne or hyperpigmentation or know a little about every thing? I just feel like I need to find my niche. I love waxing and helping people with their skin but some times I just feel so overwhelmed with all the information out there. I don't want to give up on my passion.

Hi Erica,

I feel it is important to set yourself apart from what everyone else is doing.  I try to do my own creative thing and not follow the crowd.  I don’t use the words wellness, and anti-aging.  I feel those words are not only overused, they are misused.  You mentioned the word passion.  Passion and aesthetics make a great combination.  Maybe asking yourself some probing questions will help identify your deepest motivations, dreams and desires.

Some questions to start with may be:  What is the need, or the people, whose cry touches the depths of your heart?  What’s the most satisfying thing you’ve done, and what made it fulfilling?  What are some things that you see around you that you want, will fight for, against or change?  If you had unlimited resources and could not fail, how would that look to you.

We often get too caught up in fear, and fulfilling the needs of others. Learning to identify what you don’t like is just as important as identifying what you do like.  Personal and professional development is measured by ones ability to deal with difficult circumstances, happiness and satisfaction with life.

Remember, success is something you attract by becoming an attractive person.  All the answers are within you.

Best of luck on your journey.

Juliette

That was very nice Juliette and so very true.  I just got home from 2 no shows and was questioning my career choice.  I know in my heart that this is how I can help others,  I live this profession and love learning about it, I can't get enough!  I am an independant contractor as well and it is a difficult path.  In my opinion having a niche is really important because it sets you apart as the expert in that field. Offer the basics and have something else that stands out from the crowd...that something else should be something you are really interested in and something you believe in.  check out my website to see my niche www.faithfulskin.com

I have been in the field 14years now. I have done a lot of different treatments, used various machines, etc. For me my biggest niche is waxing. I also offer a variety of facials and just brought on the skin scrubber and photo therapy. I think keeping my business at these 2 niches makes it easier for me to run my small business. Being self employed is not easy at all but very fulling and rewarding too. Like you I have no shows and last minute cancellations. It stinks but hopefully at the end of the week it will all work out. Good Luck

hi jackie, I'm a new esthetician employed at a hair salon/day spa. I feel that waxing is my niche as well, but I am feeling a little discouraged because it is not very busy at the place i work and all the stylists there do facial waxing on their own clients and there arent alot of new clients call or walking in for waxing services. as you have been in this industry for awhile do you have any advice, it would be greatly appreciated.  thanks
