I also think that as a business owner renting out a room that it is really hard to establish a new therapist without a commitment. I openly talk to new therapists about their level of commitment but do not require it. It has bit me in the butt sometimes... and it has brought me some really good people. No one wants to feel stuck and they won't be the best they can if they are not comfortable. I don't want that in our office. I feel as the economy is up and down; less are requiring a lease agreement because you don't know if you're going to be successful, but I love what Andrea said! If you aren't comfortable with the commitment, then ask them what other options they have :)

My lease was offered at the choice of month to month or extended period. I usually give myself a year at a location after doing my homework and checking out the  competition and complimentary trades in the area. I dont like to stay less than a year because it makes the clients nervous about my commitment to them and my profession.

Is it typical for a salon/spa owner to require a 1-year contract if you're leasing a room?

@ Deborah. I worked from home and it can be challenging. It really depends on your set up (I believe). Seperate entry? Professional setting? If you don't have children... that is a bonus! I have 2 little ones and it was extremely difficult. I have been more successful doing a "by appointment" business in a shop. Depends on where you are, but in the long run I have been more successful having my own space vs at home. Good luck. Try it out... if you don't like it? oh well. no loss ;)

You've done all the planning, checked and double checked yourself. Now open those doors with the same energy, excitement and enthusiasm! Just be yourself and your clients will feel a connection to you that we all sense form your post and they will gravitate to you for not only your personality but also your professionalism! Make your MarkLady!!

Hang in there Gina! Take it in small manageable steps. Keep breathing, feel that risk-taking excitement and move through the doubt. Sometimes the possibility of having to learn through mistakes is preferable to staying in a smaller, safer comfort zone. Good Luck!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Ok. in less than a month I am officially opening the "doors" of my business- and I am starting to freak out.

Any tips on remaining calm- and encouragment that I'm not making a HUGE mistake?!?! (as I begin to doubt myself on every level!!!).

breathe-breathe-breathe.......

Does anyone have tips for starting a skin care businss (doing facials and peels) in a private home?  I do not want to incur the overhead of a storefront space at this time because I do not offer waxing or makeup sessions that are easy "walk-in" business that you can upsell to skin care.  I am using Dermaquest and Arbonne products that i do sell to clients but word of mouth marketing is not enough to bring a volume of people to the door.

My gaurantee has to do with the products I retail. If they are not satisfied they can return for spa credit.
