First, you must comply with Ca State Boards of barbering/cosmo ..you must have a seperate entrance. etc...CK on their  website...

You have to have an Establishment license with the CA boards...and also with your city...

Thanks Cat. I did look on their web sight but was a little confused on the running water in the room thing. I have it available right out side the room and the bathroom is up stairs. I guess I should just call. Thanks again

You can email them and they will get back to you....I belive that a home based Biz must Be totally seperate form your living area..

Hi Samantha,

You absolutely must have a separate entrance from the outside exclusive to your room. Your clients can not walk through your private quarters to get to your business. And the entrance can not be from your garage. It must have a public restroom. Your clients can not use the restroom that you use in your house. And it must have running water. And proper ventalation, etc. And all the other sanitation and safety requirements. I have my acne and skin care clinic out of my home.  I was able to get my establishment license because I was able to meet all the requirements. So here are some tips: What I did was turn the master bedroom of my home into my skin care clinic because  it has a door going to the outside onto a private patio as well as it's own dressing area and bathroom. We changed the toilet to a handicap compliant one and pored a concrete walkway from the sidewalk in front of the house all the way up to  a pretty wrought iron gate and continued the concrete pathway all the way around the house leading to the private patio which leads to the door to the clinic. I put out signage on the gate 15 mins. before my client is to arrive and I have signage on the door to the clinic and an easal with a welcome sign on the patio. Bottomline, you must think of your home-based skin care business as a public establishment in order to get your establishment license from state board. They look at all safety issues. You also need enough electric outlets, etc.  My husband and I moved into one of our other bedrooms which is next to the main bathroom in our home. So not inconvienent for us. We very seldom if ever use the restroom in my skincare clinic. And I have none of my personal items of any kind in the clinic. IE: I do not use the closets in the clinic for anything but business stuff. Our third bedroom we made into our office/library. We do not have a dog or children living at home. And when I have a client my husband uses headphones to watch TV, reads or is on the computer. Your husbands/familys support is important when you have a business in your home. I have my liability insurance through ASCP and a business license from the city as well as a seller permit. You can check out my website which has a picture gallery of my clinic if you would like to see how I set it up. www.thefacialroom.com I was able to partition off part of the room and my husband made me a small reception/consultation area as well as my trolley and my retail displays. My acne clients love coming to my private clinic rather than having to walk through a beauty salon without their makeup on before and after their treatments and feel like everyone is staring at them as when I used to lease a room in a beauty salon. There are some cons to having a business out of your home but the pros are you save on overhead, time, and gas by being able to operate out of your home. I hope this has helped. Warm regards, Susan The Facial Room Acne & Skin Care Clinic
