I am having trouble while waxing the top part of the bikini area. What is your approach to removing the hair in this area if someone just wants say a smaller triangle or landing strip? The hair is growing inward and down and I find it hard to figure out how to place the wax and pulling it off without being in a section with hair (does that make sense)? Plus getting breakage. Do you use hard or soft wax?

When waxing shapes it is easier to wax with hard wax. If your soft wax is too warm its going to "run" into hairs that you want to leave. This technique does take practice especially if you are a soft waxer trying to use hard.

Another trick I find with soft wax is using it thicker and applying to the area I want the shape in first. This technique is harder and takes some practicing.

Erica are you using hard of soft wax??

Hey Erica,

Sounds like you are using hard wax if you are concerned about it being "in hair" for removal, am I correct?  When using hard wax the tricky part is removing the strip without flicking in the hair.  You can use another strip of hard wax as a "tab", just place shiny side to shiny side and remove without flicking in the hair.

I agree with Stephanie it's much easier to do shapes with hard wax you have more control over where it goes.  Keep in mind that in order for your shape (triangle, heart, whatever) to look good it's best if your client's hair is a bit longer and fuller within the shape.  Otherwise it can tend to look like you just missed a spot.  Let your client know that it's very difficult to get shapes symetrical as no two sides of the body are the same and it may be a bit different on one side than the other (just like brows).

I would also suggest free-handing your shape on with a washable marker that way you have some guidelines and aren't just winging it.

Good luck to you.

I am using a hard wax. Yes, my concern is flicking the wax "in hair". I will try the tab technique. As far as breakage of hair using hard wax? Am I just not using enough pressure when applying?

You have to mold the hard wax into the base of the hair in order for it to wrap around all of the hair and remove it fully.  If you are not coating all of the hair you will get breakage.  Also, if you are pulling up on removal, you will get breakage.  AND in the  "mound" area hairs are more prone to breaking so you have to pay special attention to the direction of growth.

Maybe this will help.  I have more tutorials on my website, check them out.
