How to determine your clients phototype by using the Fitzpatrick Scale

Type I- Very fair skin, generally with red or blonde hair.

REACTION TO UV- Always burns, never tans

Type II- Very common skin type characteristic of fair-skinned individuals.

REACTION TO UV- Almost always burns and tans minimally

Type III-  This client could be Mediterranean descent, a white skin with medium pigment.

REACTION TO UV- Sometimes burns and usually tans.

Type IV- This clients skin color tends to be moderate brown shade.

REACTION TO UV- Tans easily and very rarely burns

Type V- This client should be of Asian, Indian, Latin, Hispanic or some African descent.

REACTION TO UV- Almost always tans and seldom burns

Type VI- The client's skin is very dark brown or black in color

REACTION TO UV- Never burns and tans very dark*

*Recent studies have indicated that very dark skin can burn. However, it is more "burn resistant" than other skin types.
