Client thinks hard wax causes ingrowns more than Strip wax?

So yesterday I had a new client that emailed me for a Brazilian wax appointment and she asked if I used hard wax and said that she was getting waxed continually with soft wax with strips and then had a recent wax with hard wax which caused her to have really bad ingrowns. I replied back to her saying yes I use hard wax and there could be many other factors involved of why that happened such as type of wax,the Esthetician's technique, not getting it done regularly. I have never heard of a client that actually blames hard wax thinking it causes it and not the soft wax..I've always thought ingrowns and bumps can occur with either wax method! Anyway..she ended up canceling the appointment because she doesn't trust it which is fine because I do not feel comfortable doing strip wax in such a delicate area. Any input on this?

Hey Katrina,

You are right, there are many factors that contribute to ingrowns and they can occur with either hard or soft wax. If she NEVER had ingrowns with soft and then wen to someone who used hard wax, my guess is that the technician didn't know how to use hard wax. If you do not mold the hard wax into the hair, it will not be fully coated and when removed with break hair instead of removing it. This can cause the client to get ingrowns. I have a client myself that couldn't get in with me and went to someone else (who also used hard wax) and she ended up with a mess of ingrowns. It was so bad that we are still working on getting rid of the hyperpigmentation from it.

You did the right thing in educating the client and in the end, they are going to do what they are going to do. One bad apple can spoil it for everyone.

Thanks Crickett, I was hoping to get your reply on this one! Yes, she said she never had ingrowns with soft wax and was regularly getting it done for a long time. I agree with you, the first thought that came to my mind was that the Esthetician must've not used the hard wax properly and probably broke the hair off instead of getting it out by the root. I've also thought that maybe changing to a different wax all of a sudden can cause her skin to react in red bumps but I really doubt ingrown hairs.

How are you helping your client to get rid of the hyerpigmentation she got from someone else waxing her? Is she using your exfoliating cream product or something stronger? I would love to know! =-)

You're welcome. Yes I have her on the Buff Stuff and Wonder Whip to help exfoliate and remove the hyperpig little by little. Not sure if I would want to use anything stronger in that area. It just takes time. The hyperpigmentation from that type of thing is usually very superficial (unless they have picked and tried to do surgery on themselves leaving gaping holes).
