I have a 13 yr old client with bad acne. I had her looking much better last month and on her visit yesterday it was worse then I have seen. She is on my professional products, acne cleanse, vitamin c, acne peptide. Vitamin A in evening, scrub with salicylic once a week. Treatments monthly. I found out yesterday she is using Clinique make up, lots of it to cover up the redness. Also, any shampoo her mother buys.

So with all that said, what are your professional opinions?

What shampoo/conditioner should she be using?

As far as makeup I asked her mother to switch her to Jane Iredale which she will do.

Oh, and she is starting her on digestive enzymes & probiotics.

Thank you ladies for all of your help!!

Hey Kristen, considering that she is 13 ,this sounds like hormonal acne.  I personally think she is on way to many different products.   I think a salicylic acid clenser everyday will work wonders for her, along with a salicylic toner. Its obviously going to dry her skin out,but she can just use a good oily skin moisturizer.  All these chemicals she is on plus her hormons going crazy is probably causing it to get worse. I think the best for her is to get back to the basics. As for her shampoo, an all natural/organic shampoo is her best bet,and tone her face afer ,so she gets all the unnecessary shampoo off that might have fallen on her face. That can be found at whole foods or a green market. But as for products I like "IMAGE" products for acne - I find that works the best. And as for her hormons, Dr.Murad has a really good line for Hormons.  Thats just my personal opinion! Good luck!

Hi Erica,

Thank you!

It sounds like she is on a lot, but it really isn't too much. Cleanser, serum, moisturizer with a scrub once a week. The cleanser does have salicylic, the serum is for acne, helps to repair scarring, and the moisturizer has tea tree to calm redness. What image products would you use for a teen? I use their peels but not their home care line. As far as shampoos go, there are certain ones specifically for acne clients to avoid. I am not sure which ones those are.

When you break it down like that ,it doesnt sound like a lot . lol For image,  I use the salicylic acid gel cleanser along with their medicated acne lotion for spot treatment, and I use a  NATURALESSA  salicylic toner. With naturalessa they have a minimum order of $100 ,but I think its totally worth it ,and  adore that line also. Have you done high frequency on her also???  Maybe high freq. with a chamomile gel mask under it, just to help with the redness or inflamation. have you done Any IMAGE peels???Im not sure if you can get your hands on it,but the VI PEEL is excelled for acne..she made need more than one treatment ,and there is about a week of down time ,but I have seen excellent results on my clients with that. and it also helps with and scarring as well. Just throwing different things out there :)

Sounds great, and no I haven't used that peel but will see if I can get it. I have not yet done a peel, was hesitant due to her age, but you think it would be ok? Her other skin that is not affected is like baby skin. That's why I've hesitated on doing so. And come to think of it I did do HF on her last visit but not under a mask, I'll try that too. Thank you!!

My daughter was told by her dermatologist to use Bare Minerals for her make-up.   She used to use Jane Iredale.  Her acne greatly improved when she started using BM.   Just an FIY....

3 times a week she uses a face mask which she leaves on for at least an hour each time.  Manuka honey mixed with a pinch of cinnamon.   I could cry literally when I write this because as an Esthetician it was so frustrating not knowing or how to help her.   When our dermatologist 'sneakily' told us to do this home remedy as well as use "La Roche-Posay puryfying gel cleanser"....Within 2 weeks her spirits lifted and she finally started smiling when she came out of the bathroom each morning as her acne started to disappear.   She still sits and watches t.v with her homemade mask on 3 times a week.....cannot believe the difference.

I have been lucky to be able to work on my sons friends throughout school.  He's fifteen and they are at the height of their acne.  The best thing I have found to work is an internal zinc supplement.  I have them on the complexion clear from Sanitas.  They say even if they do not do their home care every day as long as they stay on the complexion clear it stays relatively clear.

@michelle Ley....do you just get your Sanitas supplement from any health food store?  I would like to bear this in mind if my daughters acne returns...as I much prefer it to all the harsh peels and salicylic acid's that enter the blood stream and dry out her little face.   Please let me know.  Thanks

Sanitas is a Boulder, Colorado based skin care company. You could call them and see how to get your hands on some.  The only place I know of that sells it retail is Pharmaca.  I ordered and used your suggestion of the Manuka honey, from a previous post.  My 12 year old daughter has developed Perioral Dermatitis.  It seems to be healing it.  We have an appointment with the dermatologist on Thursday.  Hope to have it cleared up before then.

Thanks @Michelle i will look into Pharmaca!  Yes, good luck with the Manuka.  Seriously, it has worked for me on so many levels.  Cold sores, acne, sore throats...blah, blah.   I should be on commission with some company that sells it, because I am a 'believer' and could make good $ if I was on commission!! Hope your daughter heals quickly!!

This manuka honey mask sounds amazing, where do you find that type of honey?

@kristen.  You buy it from any good health food store.  It is not a cheap honey as it is from New Zealand .  The bees in NZ take the pollen from the Manuka tree which is only found in NZ.  It is very, very healing. It comes in different +.   The higher the + the more potent it is and of course the more expensive it is.  But it is worth it for so many different remedies.   I believe it even helps with anxiety and depression if you take a tablespoon a day.    The mask CAN be used with regular honey if your budget doesn't allow.  The cinnamon helps pull the toxins/gunk out of the skin when used as a mask.   I actually think there are a few Youtube videos on honey and cinnamon face masks for acne and google probably have a good selection of blogs about it..
