What is everyone's protocol for back facials?

I am just thinking of adding this to my menu, especially for the new year and getting ready for summer-types (I'm in San Diego, its always almost summer here  ;)

I haven't done a back facial since school, though.  In school, we did cleanse, analysis, scrub with steam, extractions if needed, massage and a clay/gel mix for mask, then moisturizer.

I looked into the mud mask and gel mask that we used in school, and I thought it was pretty pricey (the mud mask) and comes in a HUGE tub!  The moisturizer we used was just a scented body cream.  I think everything was from CA Botana.

I remember the mask portion being complicated and a pain to clean up (applied the mud mixed with gel mask, laid cellophane over, hot towel and steam and left on 15 min).

Question is, does everyone do a mask in their back facial?  And if so, how do you do yours and what is your fave mask?

Thanks!

Nicole, I am still a student, (getting ready to take State here in NC.) I only have a few more waxing and makeups and then I am ready!

We do Bacials at our school.  We are a Dermalogica partner school, and we use the body mud as a mask.

I really enjoy giving the Bacials. Our regular people that come into our school for facial treatments, are offered the Bacial as another treatment they can book for their next time visit. It gives them a break from the facials. I always explain that because most people do not have anyone that can really take a deep look at their backs, I can do that for them and that getting a Bacial helps to address any comedones that may be on the back in which I can painlessly extract for them. It cleans and exfoliates the back removing any build up of dead skin cells. And it is very relaxing. 95% of our facial clients will get at least one bacial within a 3rd or 4th visit. Then they love it so much, they begin to alternate between the facial and bacial. So I say, add it to your menu! But you will have to promote it cause most people do not know what it is. I plan to put it on my menu when I open my business.

I've only done 1 and it was an express back facial.  I just customized based on what my client needed.  Since it was for breakout on the back, I cleansed, exfoliated, and did high frequency treatment, then put on an oil free moisturizer.  I would add a clay mask for a full back facial, and a shoulder and hand/arm massage.

I don't have much request for them (I forget to promote them, though they are on my menu). I pretty much do same as what I would do on the face, I see more gals who just don't ever exfoliate the back, and a few with acne. If it's mainly dead skin buildup I will use a good exfoliateing scrub-like salt/sugar etc., with acne, I will use either a 1-2 layer peel or emzyme peel followed by extractions. I have a vegtable mud mask but it comes off too hard-despite moving steamer around all areas to keep it moist, makes for stained towels and it has to sit 15-20 minutes-but a few clients really like it for the face. I do charge extra for the mask. Massage in moisturizer when finished.

International Dermal Institute does some of the best back facials around. I went to a couple different schools before deciding on my final school where we used Dermalogica, and we did a student day at International Dermal Institute and that day was on "back facials" and I had never seen it done with such a high quality and care to the client's relaxation. The other schools I had gone to did a back facial by doing exactly the same protocols as with a regular facial and using the same products. Dermalogica has some special products for back facials.

I'll have to look into that  class.  I've taken alot of classes at IDI but haven't come across that one yet.  Thanks for the heads up!

Five years in the business and not ONE back facial.

I no longer bother with wasting space by listing this on my menu.

But - if I DID do them, or if anyone ever asked for one, I would totally do a masque.

I have several that I would love to use....an Amber detox body masque, Spa Blends Mud masque, and a Collagen Hydrating masque are just a few

I have back facials on my menu and I'd love one myself if I could reach my own back. LOL

However, I have not had one client ever request a back facial. I have no idea why its an item that

doesn't get more attention but it just doesn't.

The general protocol is dry brush, steam, double cleanse, exfoliate, extractions, massage, masque, moisturizer.

You can do a lighter masque that isn't as hard to clean up. A clay masque that sets is always hard to clean up even off of a face.

Amber Products have a lot of nice products for body treatments, etc.

Good luck,

Jo
