Hi Everyone,

I have an issue that I'm hoping someone can help with.  I work at a business part time as a receptionist and I am also using their treatment room as a private contractor.  I have put a lot of time, energy and money into picking out a product line (Rhonda Allison) and really like it but now the owner says she wants me to use a product that is all organic, in keeping with their philosophies. They also want me to use a product that offers private labeling so that they can put their logo on it.  I completely understand their position on using an organic line, but feel I am being taken advantage of. I don't know if I should have to give up control of my product, so that they can make more money off of me.  Also if I disagree, it could affect my job with them as well.  They have helped me get more clients because of their customers, so without them I wouldn't have many clients yet.  So, I appreciate it, but where do I draw the line?

Hi Stephanie.  You say you're a private contractor?  I've had to do a lot of research on the ins and outs of employee vs private contractor (1099) vs renter, so let's make sure you're a real private contractor first  :)

Do you supply your own back bar?  Do you a) pay rent, b) get paid commission without taxes being taken out, or c) get paid hourly or commission with taxes being withheld?

If you are a or b, the owner cannot tell you what product line to use or tell you what to wear or when to show up.  You are independent from her.  If you are C, then you're her employee and she does have that authority.

Even if you're some mix of the 3 options (which may not be legal on the part of the owner), you have to draw the line where you're comfortable, and I, personally, would have a VERY hard time using product I don't believe in or like.  Especially if I'd invested in a pricey line like Rhonda Allison.

Why cant you offer both products? have clients choose not everyone is all about organic and just to offer a choice/variety in treatments ask boss. Express yourself and hope they can be open minded. They should not take commission off your sales of RA-in my opinion! Let them know as a IC you are your own boss and if they don't respect you look elsewhere and deal for now

make sure they understand and respect them but would rather use active product and have variety to please all clients.  good luck
