Good morning, hope everyone's weekend is going well. I have a small situation. I recently applied for a medical office for an Esthetician position. On the post it said will be trained on front and back office. Which I thought was normal just in case someone was to call put up front or if a client wanted to rebook. Also on the advertisement it stated to assist the doctor with procedures, and Saturdays are required (Didnt have the Saturday hours listed online). I went to my sit down interview on Wednesday and they informed me of the procedures they do which consist of Hydrafacial, Cool Sculpting, Ultherapy, Laser hair, Triniti series, Botox, Fillers, Artifill and so on. So I thought great I get to finally work in the medical side. I done my research before going to the iview by researching the doctor, reviews, went through Skin medica products (wasn't familiar before hand) , even looking up the hours. Here is where I am. In question. I was asked last Wednesday to do a work iview this past Saturday. As normal I thought I would perform a facial on the staff ot client of their choice. I got there at 9am yesterday, and was advised the doctor want be in until 11am. Once she showed up she advised for them to train me on the front desk and show me the different areas because each service have their own room. I was told I would do a 3 o clock microdermabrasion/ Hydrafacial. I said okay great thinking I would just come back, but she stated I would stay and learn things and learn the services in and out. The client ended up being a no call no show, so she told me to come back Monday at 930 am for me to do a facial on a staff member and meet the Esthetician. My biggest question is it normal for a working interview to last from 9am to 5pm , and then be asked to come back for the practical when it would've been done the same day as normal interviews or take no more then an hour. I have done practical interviews before and it was immediately after the sit down interview. Also after research I gather the position would pay between 8 to 12 an hour (havent confirmed with the doctor). Isnt this considered low for a medical position? Also how to approach the situation in a professional manner. I assisted with everything yesterday that was answer the phones, watch the mspa booking system, assisted with botox (by applying gauze and pressure to inserted area) , watch them do laundry, consults, and services. Which would all be in the job description if hired. Ive been in a rut because Ive always wanted to work on the medical side, but something in me saying this isnt quite right. Also I want to ask is it normal for medical offices to be open until 7pm on Saturday which that and the pay may be a deal breaker for me. The experience would look good on my resume in future, but questioning myself is it worth it. I have 3 yrs of experience, but not in a medical setting. Honestly dont know what to do or if this situation is normal

Run. They are sending up red flags all over.

Thank you for your response, the whole time I was questioning myself if it's right. Sorry for the long story I tried to include as many details as possible.

Yes that was the correct answer (RUN). They know your inexperienced.  Have faith the right position will come along.

Thank you for your response, I wanted to wait until I spoke with her one on one today before replying. I advised her that my time is precious, and that I would only do the practical and nothing more today. Def. Negotiated the pay to more, not saying Im better then the next person, just want to be paid what Im worth. Also advised that if offered the position would need to negotiate product commission, sales commission, and also benefits after the probation period. She did advise that she doesnt offer medical benefits because not required unless over 50 employees due to the state laws. Im going to research that tonight. She did offer me the position, and told me she would give me a couple days to consider it and apreciate me speaking up about hours, pay, and commission. So I just have to sleep on all this .

I have to chuckle, Amy you are like the Esty Guru.  I bet you have some stories to tell.  Being sent around the barn a few times and it won't take long to figure things out.  I thank you so much for your insight and replies I have learned a great deal.

I definitely utilize some humor! Lol but it's never intended as hurtful.

Actually that IS the pay scale in a medical setting! That is why I am always so surprised that estheticians think that this is a good career path.

For someone who is experienced (you), I agree, that pay is abysmal.

That interview sounded more like an orientation though, they sound a little confused over there.

Do they realize that they haven't made a job offer yet? Why would they "train" you and have you "assist" off the clock? smh

You will need to be a little more assertive and stand your ground. Ask directly if they are offering you a position or not. Let them know that you need more information before investing any more time, and possibly wasting their time with training for what sounds like entry level/office assistant stuff.

I agree Cindy! What set off my red flags big time was that she didn't know for sure the pay. If they haven't told you up front/right away I would l d question it.

I am pretty sure it is against the law (Labor Law's the Federal Law) to have someone work for you with no pay.  Working 9-5 is, in my eyes a full day and they owe you some money. Many forms must be filled out, i.e. Federal Income-State Withholding. If the IRS was to find this out they would have serious fines to pay.  Maybe they should be reported and stop bs people to work for them for FREE.  Just don't go back if you haven't signed papers they are breaking the law and there is nothing they can do to you.

@cindy It was honestly a shocking factor to me because I was always advised that the medical side pays between 36 to 40k a year.

Way to go!!! Good for you standing up f or yourself!!! Make your demands known and if you want the job, be very strict about your boundaries when starting. I once worked for a c company that didn't want to schedule with me because I was so great at the front desk.
