Hello all! This is my first post on the Forum, however I've been lurking for a while now. I'm really thankful for finding this Forum, as there's so much info here! My question(s) is related to job searching. It's been a week since I've passed my State Board Exam (yay!), and I've been on the prowl for work. I feel that I'd rather work in a Spa/Salon first, get more experience and start to build a clientele, before I go out on my own. My struggle is how exactly I should go about my search, and whether it is of the most advantageous use of my time to physically go to each Salon/Spa I send a resume to. Should I call to follow up on a resume I've sent, or do I just wait? Especially if the Spa has not advertised that they are looking for new Estheticians? Is it really best to physically go in to every one of them, ask to speak to the Manager and hand him/her my resume? Is it best to focus on one of two of my favorite spas and harass/stalk them, errr ummm... continuously follow up with them (hehe!) even if they aren't currently hiring???
I'm sorry for the barrage of questions, as I'm new to this industry. My background is very Corporate; I was in Commercial Real Estate for 7 years, and Corporate Customer Service for 3. In the corporate world, things are very starchy. You send your resume/apply... you sign up at a job agency... they call you for interviews, you go to the interviews, you wait... you call to follow up, you wait... From what I understand, this Industry is a little more laid back, and I feel soooo out of the loop with how to conduct myself! I don't want to appear as if I'm not willing to do allll it takes to find a job, as I totally am, however I just would love some input on the right way to do this in this industry.
Thank you in advance!

My advise would be to go in, ask for a spa tour, it will give you more time to chat & personally drop off a resume to the spas you would desire to work at, follow with a personal hand written note. ALWAYS follow up, most spas like the go getter, a bit of aggressiveness with professionalism shows you will be assertive with clients to approach them, not sit back & wait for them to come to you. Most spas will have a website where you can send an email attachment with your resume. Check with your favorite skin care line or see if product companies have local reps in your area, Call them, they have the inside scoop on what spas are hiring, or looking to hire in the near future, who's expanding ect.........I would also check with the local beauty supply store for professionals, they will have inside spa info as well & can send you on some leads....good luck, go sell yourself!!!
PS the craigslist has become a more popular post of jobs available...check it out.
