Starting a "in-home" spa business...need advice!

Hello everyone!

I am currently in the process of starting my own spa business in my own home. I recently moved to a small town (following my husband's schooling for his Masters) and it's very hard to find a job as an esthetician. Most of my clientele will be college students since I am in a college town. I told my husband until I get to really know my clients, I will only perform services while he is home. My concern is that some people will see I work out of my home and will not come.

My question is: Does anyone have their own spa business out of their home? How does it work out for you and do they keep coming back? How did you have the trust in new client's? Also, what products do you use? I am on a budget (along with everyone else in this world! lol) and I am having trouble finding a nice, reasonable product line.

Hi Lauren,

Not sure whee you are, but before you start an at home business, check with your state board for the guideline of conducting business out of your home. Most states require that you have a separate entrance for client's among other things. Just to make sure you are keeping it legal so there are no questions.

College towns don't just have college students they also have professors and teachers, who probably have more money to spend than the students. Do some market research find out the popular services then see what you need to invest in. Waxing is always easy to start with, it's a low start up cost and mostly all profit.

As for trusting client's, you just do, unless they give you a reason not to. If you talk to or meet someone and you don't feel right about them, trust your gut. It's smart to have your husband their during services until you feel comfortable.

Hello Lauren,

Firstly good luck with your new business. I am currently working out of my home. I have a nice room set up and all my clients totally love. It can get really slow at home. As you are new in your town it can be difficult. But waxing may be more of an option for college kids. (just to start off, and then word of mouth. I recently joined the Newcommer in my town. You should see if there is one in your town. You could meet people and let people know what you do and also its a nice for you to also meet new people, as you do not know anyone. They normally don't promote business's but it is one way of introducing yourself. I actually e-mailed the Newcomers in my town and asked if they would have me do a simple cooking class for Indian food and they loved the idea. That way I meet new people and having been in the same boat, can relate with Newcomers, as moving is not easy and will let them know what I do. (just an idea)
