Practical Esthetician Exam Question

Does anybody know how I can get a refresher to take the Michigan practical exam? I got my license in MN 15 years ago and MI won't honor it for reciprocity. I have been taking 40 hr refreshers in MN every 3 years to keep my license active. I just need help before taking the exam, because I know they are tricky. Please help. I just retired from computer work, am moving to Michigan and I want to start doing facials for extra retirement income. Thanks

Hi Jane,

I came from Canada in 2007 and had to rewrite all the Michigan exams due to the fact they do not recognize Canadian schooling. I know for a fact not all States have reciprocal Licenses. I actually appealed to the Board of Cosmetology which allowed me to just do the exams so as not to have to retake all my schooling. I had over 1000 hours in Esthetics plus after school clinics and then 10 years owning my own business and still some of the board members (who own some of the big name Esthetic schools) were actually trying to argue I should have to go back to school!!!!! How financially convenient it would be for them. Can anyone say 'conflict of interest'?

Go to http://www.miladyonline.cengage.com/ so you can brush up on your knowledge and practice for the exam. Not giving too much away, when I did the exam one of the questions asked how many hours Michigan students legally can attend school. How the hell would I know???? I had no frikkin' idea but even if I guessed a few questions wrong that came from left field at least there were only a few.

Thanks for replying. I hope that you are happily doing esthetics in Michigan now. I only have to take the hands-on part of the test, and not the written part. Minnesota must have a little more 'reciprocity' than Canada in Michigan. I just calculated that I also have 1000 hours of Esthi training plus another 500 nail tech and almost 2000 hours of massage training. I'll check out the miladyonline. I was going to try to fight the requirement, but decided that it probably wasn't worth it, and I should be able to pass the practical as I have just completed another 40 hours of refresher in MN where we had to do facials, waxings, tintings, etc. They just get so picky as to where you put your stuff on the table during the test and not having any hairs sneaking out of the client's head-covering, etc. I think I either need to talk to somebody who just took the practical, or somebody who teaches for it. As you said, talk to somebody who recently did it but from what I remember of the practical, I could have had Zippy the chimp fill in for me and even he would have passed. In regards to business, love, love, love it!!!!!!!!! Could not be going better. Good luck to you.

I bought a video from www.1beauty.us I watched a youtube video called "National Esthetics Practical Exam 2011 - sample" and it looked pretty good. We'll see if it helps. Thanks for your input.
