Hello Fellow Esty's!
I have an idea for 'Giving Back' to my community and I thought I would run it by all of you for feedback, as with anything more minds are greater then one!
My idea (actually my massage therapist's idea) is to offer discounts to Firemen, Police Officers and Hospital Staff. Here is what I've designed so far:
• 40% off services for service employee*
• 20% off services for employee's spouse**
• 15% off regular price products
* Must present badge or company ID on first visit.
** Must reside at same residence as service employee. CDL or ID required.
Any feedback in general or on possible issues that could arise from this program would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for checking out this post, I look forward to the discussion!

Hi Lori!
Great idea! I think I will advertise this as well.
I would add military personnel to the list. Are the discounts above for new clients only, or do they include repeat visits? I think 40% is very generous. I offer 10% discount for new clients and would consider a 20% discount to service employees and their spouses for initial and repeat visits...
Are you located near a hospital? If so, place a flyer in their HR office if they allow it.
For products I wouldn't discount more than 5% on a regular basis. One idea is to offer 10% off if the client purchases at least 3 products or more. I prefer to discount services, not products.
Are you limiting your schedule for certain times/days for your deeply discounted clients? What if you schedule becomes full with these clients and you don't have any room in your schedule to add "regular" paying clients. Just some things to think about.
Do you have a referral program? I would offer a different referral program for service personnel since they will probably be telling their friends and family what a great discount you offer and they will already be getting such a deep discount from you. Or you can just let them know that your discount is only valid for service personnel. I get most of my clients by referral and offer a free facial or peel when they refer 3 clients.
Hope this helps!
Denise
Hi Denise,
Thanks for your feedback. You bring a lot of good questions to the table so I'm going to 'rethink' the structure of this program. Thanks again! :)
Great idea! Also maybe rather than discounting your products you could do a buy x amount of products or x dollar amount and get a free service like 30 minute facial or something. The facial cost is not that much and you are making the profit on the products. Just a thought. Good luck and please keep us posted on how you do with this. Will this be all the time or a limited time offer?
Sheila I like your idea about the products! I'll keep you posted on what the final structure of the program is and how it works! Thanks!
I was thinking about doing the product thing this summer, buy 3 products get a free facial.
I am still trying to come up with my summer promos too (being by myself, these promos can be a little overwhelming). I did a teachers one, but didn't get any response, not sure why but it was a $25 off type of thing. Maybe I should have done the 50%. I have been offering 50% off when it's your birthday, I will call them if their birthday is close and let them know. I like this idea though, so I may be stealing that from you, hope you don't mind :)
I think those are all great ideas but I agree with what the others said about ways to make sure the discounts don't take over and kill your future business! Did your MT see this article in Massage & Bodywork magazine about community service? I think a lot of it is applicable to estheticians too, or really to any type of business. Massage & Bodywork: The Value of Sharing Your Values
No, I agree with your point completely, I understand that the whole idea is to do something good for those people. It's a wonderful thing to do! But you did ask about possible problems that might arise, and I think the other replies had some good ideas to consider about that.
i understand where you're coming from with the program. I know this may be a corny idea but when I used to work for att they have something which is called employee discount program. each employer had a program that was set up specifically for that company. well on the spa side think of it as special treatments and products that you set up for them. Also I know there are companies out there that have contracts with businesses. For example years ago when I worked for the credit union they had message people come on tuesday's and give chair massages during lunch. You can posibbly set something up with firefighters, or police departments that when the workers are injured they would do business with you all. I assume they can right that off at the end of the yr on their taxes.
I think this is a good idea. It's kind of a way for saying thank you for providing a service to serve and protect. I was thinking about the following below would be great also ( just played with the numbers)
30% off services for service employee*
• 10% off initial skincare at home program to get them started
