Know About the Causes and Treatment of Sunburn

Skin is the most visible and most exposed organ in the body. Therefore, it is prone to any external elements including harsh weather conditions e.g. extreme sunshine, dust particle, intense sweating and or makeup. Such conditions may severely affect and cause peeling of skin, blisters, rashes such as heat rash and more. Protecting your skin becomes a single but very essential responsibility for each person or individual.

Sunburn
This is the term or word used to refer to swollen, red in color and painful skin conditions that appears as a result of taking long or spending long hours under the sun. It is a damage to the skin cells, which occurs due to the sunrays intensity. If it is quite high and the rays meet with your exposed skin, sunburns appear. In some cases, sunburns are said to contribute to the occurrence of skin cancer in some people.

Causes of Sunburns
Specific rays of the sun that penetrate to the earth’s atmosphere cause sunburns. In general, the sun emits three types of rays: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVA and UVB rays are responsible for causing sunburns. This occurs especially where or when the sun intensity is quite high and the radiation produced by these rays is exposed to the human skin. People who leave in low latitude degrees have high intensity sunrays. Occurrence of sunburns is dependent on:

 • The type of skin you have- Different skins have different capabilities and some have the ability to minimize the chances of being affected by the sunrays.
 • The intensity of the sun- how hot it is during that specific period of the day.
 • How much time is spent under the sun and the location in which you are in; at the coast or in the mountains? These two locations have varying sun intensity or sunburn occurrence.

Symptoms
To know whether you are experiencing sunburns, these are the specific signs that you will see and to some extent feel.

 • Swelling or blisters on the skin, which are painful.
 • Fever accompanied by chills indicates that the sunburns are quite severe and medical attention should be sought.
 • You may feel weak and sometimes have headaches.
 • After a while, you may experience peeling of skin indicating that your skin is starting to heal and the damaged skin cells are peeling off.

Treatment of sunburns

Sunburns are treated using two approaches. The first approach entails relieving the reddened skin and eliminating signs of inflammation. The second approach involves providing medication that eases on the pain. In addition, medication and treatment also includes means by which to prevent other occurrences of sunburns. Here are some of the ways to treat sunburns.

Cold Compress
Burns in any specific occurrence are cooled off by something cooler and a cold compress is the answer. Using a cold compress provides temporary relief. You can also have a cold bath as it also acts as a cold compress.

Cosmetics
Cosmetics whose constituents include menthol, aloe vera and camphor offer the best solution. If a gel or a cream is available the better it is. Place the cream or gel in a refrigerator and apply to the affected area

Antibiotics
Some medical drugs have the capability of reducing the swell and any inflammation that occurs. In addition, they reduce the amount of pain that you feel as the burns heal. A medical professional or physician best prescribes these before starting on their use.

Hydration
Water is an essential part of your skin care process and routine. Whether going out into the sun or not, it is important to remain hydrated at all times. Dehydration and sunburns do not go hand in hand and it increases peeling of skin, the opposite is true and you increase your chances of being healed.

Wear sunscreen and avoid being in the open sun
When already suffering from sunburns, the most efficient means is to avoid spending time on the sun. Until the burns heal, this is the way. Sunscreen is one of the protective measures that you can use to protect yourself from the sunrays. Apply the sunscreen regularly and at the same time, put on clothes that protect your skin from the sun.

Conclusion
Sunburn occurrence can result in severe pains that may take a long while to heal. Therefore, focus on prevention rather than treatment. Protecting your skin also should be a priority in each case. There are many ways to protect yourself and you should have the means at your fingertips. However, if already suffering, the above treatment process is unique and you will be back to your normal skin after a short period.
