I am not sure of the help I would ask for at the moment. Most of the time, I find just being able to come here and be apart of Skin Care Professionls and these wonderful groups has helped me. Getting advice from beginners to seasoned professionls is wonderful. And the best part that I have found, is even if you are new to Esthetics/ or even still in school, the ones that has more experience and years under their belts, are always friendly and ready to help answer any questions one may have.

Not really a wish for help, per se, but I wish more spa owners would make it possible for people to get a job in the industry out of school, without having to worry about how to pay the bills. Even commission sales jobs provide a base salary + a commission. Once you get built up, going straight commission might not be bad, but until then, how do people live and pay their bills?

im lucky to have the love, support and patience of my partner. i wouldnt be able to do thus with out him. feast and famine....

Hello everyone,
My wish for help is, How do you actually get recognized as a trained professional and enter in to the Esthetics industry? I graduated 1 year ago. I have a state license. After graduating I visited several salons/spas and talked with managers and owners about practicing in the establishments. I, to this date, have not been successful in finding a position. I am 53 years old and honestly, I am feeling like people think I am too old. Especially, when there is a salon involved. I am professional in appearance, and mannerism. I feel confident when talking about skincare and I am trained in 3 aspects of Esthetics. Skincare, waxing and Makeup. I'm puzzled as to "what it takes" to convince someone I can "Handle the Job"!

I'm sorry to hear you are having such a hard time. I was 45 when I went back to school, so I understand where you are coming from. I simply wrote alot of personal cover letters to each place I wanted to learn more about, enclosed my resume and mailed them out whether they were looking for someone or not. I started by asking for part time, and that made the difference for me. Originally I asked for full time and all the doors closed. Asking for part time, and they were alot more open. I never thought it might be my age, and I really hope that is not the case for you. Maybe research some places that has a more seasoned owner and clientele? Good luck!

A local Esthetician support group that meets once or every other month to share ideas and discuss issues etc. I live in RI and have been in the industry for 12 years and wish there were local people in the industry I could go to for advice when need be. I felt so alone until I bumped into this forum by chance!! Was soooo happy to see that there is a place that we can go to, vent or get advice and know that the feedback given, is coming from people who truly want see each other succeed!! This site has been a blessing!! AMEN AND YIPEEEE!! :)

I agree with all of these ladies. I have actually met a lot of Estheticians through this forum that I have become friends with (even local) and will get together with them from time to time and it is wonderful to have that support and bounce ideas off one another.
I say another thing is just help staying on top of industry news. It's so overwhelming. Everytime I turn around a client is saying OH I read this or I saw this on tv and that and I feel like an idiot because I haven't seen or heard of it in particular or there is some new ingredient out.
Also Social Media and SEO help I would say is a big one.

Thank you so much for your input! What I am hearing is we are really disconnected from each other and are not being taken seriously as a profession, which translates to not being able to make a living. A certification that is recognized nationally will help somewhat (NCEA, CIDESCO, ITEC) also a concentrated effort to raise our visibility as a profession is another.
Do you find it hard to get updated non product specific information? For example best practices in chemical peeling etc..?

It has been awhile since this post appeared but I wanted to add my 2 cents. Yes, I need more non product specific information. There are good informative workshops/classes at the trade shows but they are often (usually) taught by product owners/reps. I'd like to have classes on the different facial machines...my school barely gave a passing nod to treatment machines so I am educating myself. Susanne, I noticed that you offer a book on facial machines. How can I get a copy? There is a DVD out, does anyone have info, or a review on it?
