Do you offer add-on's, and do they really increase your revenue?

Hi Everyone!  I am a fairly new esthetician, and have had the good fortune of being allowed to use my employer's facial clinic to give facials to my own clients.  Now, I've been getting referrals and business is growing!  Here's my dilemma - I am working as a sales rep for an addendum line (we only offer about 14 products - serums and fiber masks), so I've been marketing this line to different spas/salons/skincare professionals as a great way to increase sales and help clients get more specialized treatments.

Now, as I am beginning to offer my own services, I am unsure of whether or not to offer these add-on treatments to my clients.

So, for personal reasons, I am wondering how add-on treatments are received by others' clients, if any independent estheticians offer add-on's, and if they really do make you more money...  I'm trying to streamline my menu of services, and since I've only been giving facials a few months, I'm not sure if I should make it simple and offer only a couple types of facials (in which I choose the specific treatment), or go into more detail and offer add-on's like ampoules, masks, extended massage, etc...  Please, any advice and comments would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you!

My thoughts on Add on services..I offer one facial...and its just a customized facial.  I do not have any set particular facials because everyone needs a little of everything and I cater it to their needs/concerns/skin type of course.  I have a few add ons but to be honest, I use the add ons to advertise specials...like FREE lip treatment with this and what not.  Maybe that is the wrong way to go about it, but if you break down the price per facial you are already making a profit, so why not throw in things for free.  Don't get me wrong, some clients will want the add on service (micro, light peel, lip treatment, LED, eye treatment, post facial meditation is what I offer), but most of the time I will throw an add on in for free, just so they feel they are getting a better value but I am also not intending to make millions with this career either.

Natalie, I am repping for Touche Beauty, which was created by Barbara and Wilma Schumann.  It's an addendum line, so we just offer seven serums, four masks, an SPF, and a jade roller to use during treatments.  I guess that adds up to 13 products...  ;)  We did offer a bleaching pen with hydroquinone, but had to recall because of some packaging issues.  Unofrtunately, I have to follow their suggested retail prices in the clinic, or I would sell them to my clients for less...  So I've just been using them in my facials and trying not to push products on anyone (except my mom!!!).  I do suggest a few drugstore products (like the Cera Ve spf) to clients that really need something extra.

Right now, we're mostly selling to professionals and haven't started forming a territorial sales team yet.

And I always have my clients lay down for a few minutes, taking deep breaths with a tissue with lavender oil tucked into the towel on their chest, while I finish up some quiet set up.  It's kind of like their own meditation!

Hi what's a post facial meditation?....

it's a service I added on after much though and a friend actually mentioning the same day...it's where if they don't want to get up after their treatment, they don't have to.  They can take an extra 20-30 minutes if they would like to meditate, relax, take a snooze, whatever, it's their time.  They can also pair it with RED light led therapy.  A bunch of my friends have children and sometimes aren't quite ready to get back to reality.  I never rush my clients out to begin with and tell them to take their time but this is just if they want me to turn up the relaxing music and leave them in peace.

Thank You,

oh and I charge $1 a minute, same for the LED.

You can check out the info on here.  Please excuse my website, I am working on a  new one and this one will double space and single space when it wants and I am not tech savy enough to figure out why :)

Hi Sheila,
I just checked out your website, very nice. I was wondering what products you use for your lip scrub and mask and your eye mask? I am a new esty trying to put a menu together and that looks like it would be a nice service to have. Thank you very much!!! I love this forum and all the awesome info everybody shares!!!

Right now I use bioelements sugar lip scrub, but have used Sugarlips brand in the past.  I just purchased Satin Smooth eye and lip collagen masks, the vitamin c solution is glo therapeutics, and I finish the lips with Image Ormedic lip.  A little bit of everythign i guess :).

Thank you.... :-)

Like anything...if you upgrade the facial by add on treatments because the client and her skin 'needs' them then the money will always follow.  If you are just adding on services for the monetary gain, you will come across as disingenuous and clients won't buy into it.  If her eyes look like they need something and you know that she can take this product home with her in her hand also because it will help her...then absolutely up sell! :)   some clients come for facials just because they find it is relaxing.   A question I always ask a client is "what do you like the most about a facial or what do you dislike about a facial?".  If they comment that they love the massage part of the facial the most and she has tons of extractions that need doing, then you could say...... "because you have quite a few extractions that need taking care of today and it might chip into your massage part of the facial, would you like to upgrade your facial today, so you get a longer massage?"     Very rare has a client ever said 'no' to this.    Hope that helps.

so what would u charge??? and time???

I have just gone through this with my menu, which i redesigned at the start of this year.

I shortened my list of facials to just 2: custom and custom plus. The difference is the custom plus is $15 more and includes more advanced serums and AHAs. Its more corrective. The regular custom is scrubs or enzymes, kinda like a basic European facial.

As for add Ons, I made a separate menu. I have $10, $15, and $25 add Ons on the list. Clients can add services to their facials, such as hand treatments, additional massage, neck and décolleté treatment, brow or lip wax (at a discount), LED, etc.

I offer it, rarely push or even suggest. Clients who want the extra TLC or service will add it on their own. :)

I think it can be a good source of extra income, too. And it's a good way to add on value for free for some of your great clients. Adds Ons don't generally cost me anything except a few minutes of time, but if I choose to throw one in as a special or gift for a client they really appreciate it!
